Chromic Catgut Suture discription Chromic Catgut Suture is a variant treated with chromic acid salts. This treatment produces roughly twice the stitch-holding time of plain catgut. Full tensile strength is extended to 18–21 days.it has improved smoothness due to the dry presentation of the thread (plain catgut is wet). It is otherwise similar to plain catgut Plain Catgut is a biologic absorbable suture obtained from sheep gut submucosa. Its threads are treated whit chromic salts to prolong the absorption time of the suture. 1. Catgut suture a natural absorbable suture and is obtained by longitudinally slitting the intestinal submucosa of sheep and goat, twisting the ribbons and joining them in wet condition giving monofilament finish.
2. Catgut plain sutures are absorbed by enzymatic hydrolysis and starts loosing tensile strength from 12-15 days on implantation.
3. Catgut plain sutures are absorbed extremely fast and elicit very minimal tissue reaction.
